The Pretty in Kate Appeal

July 19, 2011

So what is it about the Duchess of Cambridge that inspires us so?  It’s not like Kate’s a former Hollywood actress like Grace Kelly or of royal descent like her late mother-in-law Princess Diana.  She’s an athletic, college educated girl that comes from a working class family that earned their way up. (Okay, so Kate is related to Jane Austen, but still…)

But maybe that’s what makes us love her.  She’s, well, normal.

From the moment Kate Middleton stepped into the limelight she has drawn the attention of women of all ages because we can identify with her.  She was seen being hounded by the paparazzi in cute sundresses and flats while getting into her Volkswagen Golf.  This easily could have been me.  I wear sundresses and flats and I certainly didn’t have a fancy car while I was in college (1995 Mercury Sable with blue interior, holler!).  Her hair is even straight and brown like mine.  I mean, we could be twins, except for that I would starve to death before I could ever be a size 2!

The Duchess wears classic pieces that could be made by her favorite designer, Issa, or could have been bought off the rack at Zara, the European version of Gap.  This is what makes it so intriguing to follow her. You’re just waiting for her to step out in a dress that you could jump right online and buy because it’s by a reasonably priced label. This is an absolute possibility with the Duchess, which is the key to her appeal.  We’re able to take her style and easily replicate it because she is a royal for the masses.

To prove my point, the Reiss dress she recently wore to meet with Michelle Obama, while no longer available, was only $340.  Still not cheap for our pauper budget, but much more reasonable than $3,400.

Then there’s Issa, the designer who created her GORGEOUS sapphire blue engagement dress that I would kill for.  Kate is a big fan of this design house and has been seen wearing her bird print Issa dress multiple times over the years…and she rocks it.  There is nothing that melts our PiK hearts more than seeing someone who is married to a future king and is not afraid to wear the same thing twice (or even three times)!  Plus, you can find something just like that dress on the racks of H&M, White House Black Market, or Forever 21 at just about anytime.  It’s simple, achievable style.

And let’s not forget the craze over her purchase of J Brand Jeans.  First of all, she had my undying love when this little shopping tidbit came out because I’m a J Brand fan.  I’m not usually one to spend an astronomical amount on jeans (I’m more of a dress girl), but after trying numerous cheap pairs of skinny jeans that stretched and sagged on me, I became a J Brand convert and have never looked back.  This means that I own the same brand of something as Kate.  This is where I clap and scream gleefully because I found a common thread between myself and a member of the royal family. Not something that happens to me everyday…or ever.

So do you get my point?  We love her because we could be her.  She was just as much of a stretch to become a royal as any of us (ok, well she had the advantage of actually living in the same country as him), and now that she is one Kate is representing the rest of us common people magnificently.  What’s not to love?

Part of why we all love her is the ability to be discreet in such a flamboyant world. She does things in a classic yet current way. She is demure without a hint of prudery. She could totally run around and let people “accidentally” spill the beans on her beauty tricks, where she’ll be or what she’s wearing. Her mystique comes from her privacy. We’ve seen that with the American version of “royalty”, the Kennedy’s. Jackie Kennedy Onassis & Carolyn Bessette Kennedy both had the mystique factor. Like Kate now, someone only had to whisper they saw them purchase this or that and the whole of the fan base ran out to get their hands on it.
She doesn’t talk a lot yet (on the record talk) so all we have to go on is her style (lovely) and her public character (class act)

You’re so right Lo. The Kennedy’s are certainly our version of royalty and Jackie O/Carolyn Bessette definitely had a mystique about them that Kate is emanating. If she were more of a media hound or did outrageous things in public we would be far less intrigued by her.
