Pretty n’ American

For some reason, crochet anything reminds me of American hippies. Maybe it’s because I live in Austin — home of Hippie Hollow — that my grandmother taught me the basics of crochet (she had a home full of crochet blankets that had a very 70s look to it). So when I saw Kate’s black crochet top today, I immediately thought hippie.

Clearly, she’s not a hippie. Instead, she makes it sleek and sophisticated, pairing it with a lovely cream pleated skirts from British brand Whistles. And as is the trend, the skirt is close to being sold out (it shows it’s in low stock). And that lovely crochet shirt (also by Whistles) — maybe you can find it on eBay because it dates all the way back to 2007, based on some stellar sleuthing by What Kate Wore and Duchess of Cambridge Style. So, barring a time travel machine, here are a few alternative looks to check out:

There are conflicting reports that the crochet cardigan worn by Kate today was either navy or black. Regardless, it’s a hard style to come by. Right now, J. Crew has a great crochet sweater on sale for $70. Pair it with a white tank top (I’ve linked to one from J. Crew, but you can find these on the cheap at any department store) and then this skirt from Ralph Lauren. While it doesn’t have the pleats Kate’s has, the way it hangs gives a nice illusion of it. I would consider pairing the entire outfit with a lovely brown belt and then wear a pair of matching brown shoes to tie the look together. (I’m already thinking with my BCBG belt and my brown Jimmy Choo heels). The look would have a more casual — almost hippie — feel to it, which I suppose means this blog post has gone full circle 🙂

You know what was also weird? Reese Witherspoon looked chubby standing next to Kate. That’s messed up!
